What is Diamond Grading?

Grading Diamond means categorizing diamonds on the basis of their color, clarity, cut and carat and giving them a particular grade from the category decided by national and international standards.These grades not only decide the quality but also the price of a diamond.There are many things in a diamond which a normal person is unaware of.People purchase diamond as told by the suppliers or jewelers as lack of their some basic technical knowledge.Let us try to understand what a lay man or trader should look in the certificate of a Diamond before purchasing it.There are four Cs in Diamond which every person should check out in the Diamond grading report so that they can make out what type of Diamond they want and which one suit best to their requirement.

4 C's of Diamond Grading :

1st C [Color]

The range given to color grade diamonds is from D to Z

D,E, & F stands for completely white color or colorless stones having no shades or tint of Yellow or Brown, G to Z have little to very dark shades of Yellow or brown.Color grading of a diamond can be confirmed with the help of Master stones available for color grading of diamonds. Colorless stones are rare and very much valuable compared to shaded or tinted stones. But those diamonds which have particular pure shade of a color like pure yellow, pure brown, blue or green are also very rare and are very valuable.

2nd C [Clarity]

As explained above the Clarity grade defines that the stone is absolutely or very much inclusion free or have no impurity in it. The clarity grade of a diamond depends of factors like Number, Size, Relief and Place of inclusion. If there is slight or very much impurity or inclusions then they are give the clarity grade as stated above. If the stone is absolutely free of inclusions then the stone is called flawless or internally flawless. If the stone have very slight inclusion then the stone is called VVS1 or VVS2. If it has little more inclusions the it is called VS stone graded as VS1 or VS2 depending on number, size and place of inclusions and so on.

3rd C [Cut]

The cut of a diamond is the only property which is totally dependent on man, although often overlooked , cut is actually one of the most important aspects. A diamond cutter analyzes the rough diamond, and has to determine how to extract the most beauty and most profit out of the rough stone. Cut of diamond can be any Round Brilliant,Marquise, Baguette, Square , princess etc. But here cut grading is give on the overall cut of a stones like looking at the proportion of height, depth of Pavillion, Shape and size of facets etc.The grading criteria of cut for Diamonds is Excellent Very Good Good Fair and Poor, considering all the above points.

4th C [Carat]

Carat is the term or unit used to measure the weight or Size of Diamond.It differes from the Karat used for checking the purity of Gold.Carat is specially used to measure weight of diamond.The sub – division of carat is cent like sub-division of Rupee is Paise. 1 Carat = 100 Cents As big the size of diamond it will be very rare and expensive compared to smaller size diamonds
